The Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria

The Roman amphitheater is one of the most popular monuments in Alexandria. This is the only Roman amphitheater in the whole of Egypt. It was discovered by a coincidence in the 1960 when the government was constructing a building, one of the workers revealed a column and shortly after words excavation started and reveal the whole work.

The Roman amphitheatre of Alexandria was used for several purposes along the history. It was used for musical shows and performances. In the Byzantine era, it was used as a governmental summits and public assemblies. In some time, it was used also as lecture hall.

Next to the Roman amphitheatre, there is some Roman bathes and a villa called the villa of birds, which houses a lot of mosaic ornaments of birds in different shapes.
