Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings in Luxor

The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Luxor where tombs were built for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of Ancient Egypt. Pharoahs were buried in secret tombs and well protected and hidden. Yet several of the tombs were discovered to grave robbers who plundered most of the valuable belongings.

The ancient Egyptians believed in the after life. That is why preserving the body and the belongings of the kings or powerful nobles was quite important. The Valley of the Kings and other West Bank necropolis are a significant evidence of that.

The most famous tomb is KV62, the Tomb of King Tutankhamun. The discovery of King Tut’s tomb was made by Howard Carter on November 4, 1922. Tutankhamun’s tomb was the first royal tomb to be discovered and still largely intact. It was the last major discovery in the valley. King Tutankhamun was a rather minor king and other burials probably had more numerous treasures.
