Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria

Qaitbey citadel was built on the ruins of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was considered as one of the ancient seven wonders of the world. The lighthouse was destroyed due to earthquakes.

The citadel was built by Sultan Qaitbey to protect Alexandria from the Ottoman invasion. Eventhough the Ottoman took control of Egypt, the fort remained in a strategical location.
It was damaged heavily during the British invasion of Egypt and was rebuilt in the 20th Century.
